The て-form is a core verb form in Japanese.

 

It is used in many patterns.

3. RULE

 

🔵 RU-verbs(る動詞)

 

Remove 「」 and add 「

 

 

Important(重要)

 

Many RU-verbs end

with IRU / ERU, but not all.

 

 

But there are exceptions.

 

 Not all verbs ending in 「」 are RU-verbs.

 

 

 

Examples

 

たべ → たべ

TABERU → TABETE

eat → TE-form of eat

 

→ み

MIRU → MITE

see → TE-form of see

 

→ ね

NERU → NETE

sleep → TE-form of sleep

🔴 U-verbs(う動詞)

 

Change from dictionary form

 

Pattern

Change based on the last sound of the dictionary form.

 

↓ First, check the pattern below.

 

う / つ / るって

む / ぶ / ぬんで

    → いて

    → いで

    → して

 

 

Now, look at how they change in the examples below.

 

→ かって

buy → TE-form of buy

 

→ まって

wait → TE-form of wait

 

→ とって

take → TE-form of take

 

 

→ よんで

read → TE-form of read

 

あそ → あそんで

play → TE-form of play

 

→ しんで

die → TE-form of die

 

 

→ かいて

write → TE-form of write

 

およ → およいで

swim → TE-form of swim

 

はな → はなして

speak → TE-form of speak
