Listing actions

 

〜たり〜たり(動作列挙)

 


 

1. What isたりたり

 

 〜たりたり

 = “do things like ~ and ~”

 

 Used to list multiple actions.

 

 This grammar uses the TA-form.

 ( Lesson 017 )

 


 

2. Basic Pattern

 

 「TA-form + 」+「TA-form +

 = used to connect actions

 

 たべ、のん

 eat and drink, etc.

 

 

 

 「TA-form + 」+「TA-form + りする

 = casual pattern

 

 たべ、のんりする

 eat and drink, etc.

 

 

 

 「TA-form + 」+「TA-form + りします

 

 = polite pattern

 

 たべ、のんします

 eat and drink, etc.

 

 


 

3. Examples

 

 たり + たり only

 

 たべたり、のんだり

 Eating, drinking, and things like that.

 

 あるいたり、はしったり

 Walking, running, and things like that.

 

 ないたり、わらったり

 Crying, laughing, and things like that.

 

 みたり、かいたり

 Watching, writing, and things like that.

 


 

 

 Casual

 たり + たりする

 

 たべたり、のんだりする

 I eat and drink.

 

 おきたり、ねたりする

 I wake up and sleep.

 

 つけたり、けしたりする

 I turn things on and off.

 

 ぬいだり、きたりする

 I take off and put on clothes.

 


 

 

Polite

 たり + たりします

 

 たべたり、のんだりします

 I eat and drink.

 

 みたり、かいたりします

 I watch and write.

 

 あけたり、しめたりします

 I open and close things.

 

 やせたり、ふとったりします。

 I lose and gain weight.

 


 

 

4. Important Note

 

 〜たり〜たり

 does NOT mean actions happen in order.

 

 It simply lists actions.

 


 

 

5. Grammar Meaning

 

 〜たりたり

 = “do things like ~ and …”

 

 Used to list multiple actions.

 

 This grammar uses the TA-form.

 


 

 

6. Important Note

 

 〜たりたり

 does NOT show action order.

 

 

Example:

 

 たべたり、のんだりします

 does NOT only mean:

 

 “eat first, then drink.”

 

 

It means:

 

“doing various actions like eating and drinking.”

 


 

 

7. English Translation

 

 This grammar does NOT show action order.

 

 It simply lists actions.

 

 

Example:
