1. What is 〜たい

 

 〜たい

 = “want to do”

 

 Used to talk about what you want to do.

 

 This grammar attaches to the MASU-stem.

 ( ます

 

 


 

2. Basic Pattern

 

 MASU-formたい form
 ます → たい

 

 たべます → たべたい

 want to eat

 

 のみます → のみたい

 want to drink

 

 いきます → いきたい

 want to go

 

 します → したい

 want to do

 

 きます → きたい

 want to come

 

 


 

3. Examples

 

Casual

 

 たい

 

 えいがを みたい

 I want to watch a movie.

 

 うみへ いきたい

 I want to go to the sea.

 

 らーめんを たべたい

 I want to eat ramen.

 

 はやく ねたい

 I want to sleep early.

 

 

Polite

 

 たいです

 

 とうきょうへ いきたいです

 I want to go to Tokyo.

 

 にほんごを べんきょうしたいです

 I want to study Japanese.

 

 あたらしい くるまを かいたいです

 I want to buy a new car.

 

 きょうは やすみたいです

 I want to rest today.

 

 

4. Important Note

 

 〜たい

 

 expresses your own desire.

 It is mainly used for:

 “I want to do something.”

 

 

It does NOT usually describe

another person’s desire directly.
